Frequently Asked Questions

How long does my hair have to be to get waxed?

It’s common to hear “as long as a grain of rice” but rice comes in many lengths! So, to be more accurate, your hair needs to be at least half a centimeter (5mm, or 3/8 of an inch) long and no longer than 1 cm (10mm or ½ inch) for the wax to do its job properly. Typically, this takes 2 weeks of growth after shaving, but some bodies grow hair faster and some grow it more slowly.

Why shouldn’t my hair be much longer than 1cm?

Longer hair tends to break off instead of being removed by the root when waxed. Not all hair will break, but some will. This leads to the hair resurfacing a lot sooner, which can be disappointing. If you do have to wait a long time before getting waxed, and your hair is quite a bit longer than 1cm, we encourage you to come back in 2 weeks to get the ones that have been broken instead of extracted.

Do I have to trim before my wax?

No. It’s better to leave the hair longer and risk breakage, because if you trim it too short most of the hairs will not be extracted, and you’ll have to come back a lot sooner than the recommended 3 weeks.

How often should I come for a wax?

Ideally you come back every 3 weeks, no longer than 4. Often it will look like there isn’t enough hair there to be waxed, but there is.

What are the benefits of consistent waxing? And why?

Consistent waxing leads to a reduction in hair growth and a less painful experience. Waxing (when done before the hair gets longer than 1cm) removes the root of the hair. This removal causes the follicle to be weakened, leading to having to regenerate an entirely new strand of hair. That hair becomes finer over time, leading to easier extraction which means less pain.

I keep getting ingrown hairs, what can I do?

Ingrown hairs can be caused by a lot of things, but the main thing to avoid them is preventative measures. Keep the waxed area cool, clean and dry for 24 hours before and after your service. This means no heated seats, no exercise, no saunas, hot tubs or pools, and no sex (especially before and after a Brazilian wax). Wash the residual wax off your skin within the first hour as well. If you find these alone don’t help to keep you from getting ingrown hairs, you can use a roll on anti-perspirant to reduce sweating. If you continue to get ingrown hairs, using an acne spot treatment cream or pimple patch can reduce how long the ingrown hair is present and keep the inflammation down. Do your best not to pick at it or tweeze the hairs, as this can lead to scaring and infection.

Can I shave between appointments?

No. It’s not the best idea to shave between appointments because you are just cutting the hair off, leaving the root in and hair growth comes back thicker and darker and more difficult to extract. Which is more painful!

What do I do with left over hairs?

Leave them alone! Tweezing can cause breakage and skin damage. If you shave, they’ll come back prickly in 1-2 days. If there are quite a few left (due to having the hair too long/too short in the first place for example) rebooking for 2 weeks is recommended. If there are only a few, just leave them and we will get them at the next appointment in 3 weeks.

What is the difference between a lash lift and a lash perm?

A lash lift and a lash perm employ the same methods and solutions but give different results. The Lash Lift gives a J curve to your lashes, which accentuates the length of the lashes. It is best suited to lashes that are short to medium-long. The Lash Perm gives a C curl. It is best suited to extra short lashes.

Do I have to get a tint at the same time as a lash lift or perm?

No, you don’t. But getting the tint at the same time really accentuates that lift or perm and means that you can go without mascara more often! The only time it makes no sense to tint is if you have black eyelashes already.

Should I get lash extensions or a lash lift/perm?

Both options are great for their own reasons. Lash extensions are great if you have thin short lashes, as they add volume and length. They do require more maintenance (daily care, more frequent visits) than the lash lift/perm. Lash Lift/Perms are great if you have good lashes and want to quit using the lash curler. They allow you to wear makeup and mascara as usual, offering a versatility that the extensions don’t. Lifts/Perms require less maintenance as well.

Can I still get a Brazilian wax while on my period?

Short answer, yes. Please wash up and insert a new tampon right before your appointment. Know that the service will hurt a little more than normal, though.
